What is Naturopathy?
Humans have sought nature’s cure for the ailments of man from the beginning of time.
Naturopathy is an approach to health care which combines traditional healing approaches (such as herbal medicine, food as medicine and the therapeutic value of nature) with applied evidence based scientific knowledge on how isolated natural chemical compounds can be utilised for therapeutic and rejuvenating effect in the human body.
The Naturopathic Approach
A naturopath seeks to connect the dots between your health problem and the factors that impact your wellbeing, including
- Stress
- Environmental factors
- Lifestyle factors
- Diet and nutritional quality of food
- Family health history
- Effects of past illness, injury or trauma
A naturopathic consult involves a comprehensive inventory of all the factors that may be contributing to your health problem.
Naturopathic testing
In order to gain more specific information on how your body is functioning, relevant diagnostic tests may be recommended, such as:
- Gut microbiome analysis
- Hair tissue mineral analysis
- Hormone testing
- Genetic testing
- Vaginal microbiome testing
- Blood glucose
- Cortisol levels
- Blood pressure
- Iris analysis
- Heavy metals
Naturopathic treatment
A naturopath is trained in the study of both Nutrition and Western Herbal medicine.
Naturopathic recommendations may also include:
-
- Dietary recommendations;
- Supplement advice;
- Detoxification protocols to assist with unburdening organ systems;
- Lifestyle recommendations to reduce the effects of stress or toxic exposure;
- Self-care recommendations to assist with achieving desired health goals;
- Referrals to other alternative health care practitioners or your GP.
Naturopathy as complimentary medicine
While conventional medicine usually involves targeted symptomatic treatment for short term relief, Naturopathy can assist with identifying the source of the problem (e.g. nutritional deficiency, toxic load, overstimulated nervous system) and resourcing the body in order to improve the body’s innate healing capacity.
Naturopathy is a regulated industry
Naturopathy is a recognised system of health care by the World Health Organisation.
Naturopathy is regulated by professional associations which approve both educational and clinical practice standards and represent practitioner’s interests to the public, government and other agencies such as the Therapeutic Goods Authority (TGA). Naturopathic associations determine practice standards by providing a code of conduct for members and setting standards for continuing professional education.
